An appendicectomy is a procedure carried out to treat severe appendicitis. The doctor will first make a number of small cuts in your child’s abdomen and then use special instruments including a small tube with a light and camera (laparoscope) to remove their appendix. If the appendix has ruptured your doctor may need to perform an open procedure, which requires a bigger cut down your child’s abdomen.
The cuts will either be closed with dissolvable or standard stitches, which will be removed by a nurse at a later date.
The procedure usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour and your child will be asleep for the duration.
