Initial consultation

During an initial consultation, your doctor will examine the lump or abnormality in your breast. They will eliminate illnesses or infections based on this examination.

You may be referred for tests to form a diagnosis, often a mammogram and/or breast ultrasound. Other tests include a breast biopsy, where cells are taken for testing, as well as a scan and needle test to check lymph nodes in the armpit.

Bilateral ultrasound

A bilateral ultrasound is used to diagnose lumps or other abnormalities in the breast that have already been identified by mammography.

During this non-invasive procedure, the sonographer places ultrasound gel and a small transducer (probe) on the breast. High-frequency sound waves are transmitted from the probe, through the gel, and into the skin. A computer system uses these sound waves to create an image of the internal structures of the breast.

Bilateral mammography

Bilateral mammography is a low-dose X-ray that is used to detect early-stage breast cancer. During the examination, your breast will be compressed in a mammography unit. Compression can be slightly uncomfortable but is necessary to ensure that all tissue is visible and to prevent blurry images.

You will need to alter your position during the X-ray procedure and will be undressed from the waist up. You may be provided with a hospital gown. Radiographers doing mammograms are always female.

Ultrasound-guided (US) Tru Cut biopsy

An ultrasound-guided (US) Tru Cut biopsy uses sound waves to locate a lump or abnormality in the breast. The pathologist will use image guidance and a Tru Cut needle to take a biopsy (tissue sample), causing minimal trauma. The biopsy won’t leave a scar.

This service includes histology: The sample will be examined at a microscopic level. The pathologist will make a diagnosis based on your results, though further examination is sometimes necessary.

Follow-up Consultation

During your follow-up consultation, your doctor will discuss your test results with you. Your doctor may offer a diagnosis or further tests.

If you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, your treatment will be managed by a multi-disciplinary team. Your treatment will depend on a number of personal factors and your type of cancer diagnosis, but treatment won’t go ahead until you’re happy with your care plan and have given consent.

Excision of Breast Lump / Fibroadenoma

Breast lumps are common and are often benign (non-cancerous). However, if the lump is painful or larger than 4cm, your doctor may refer you for an excision biopsy. You can also request this surgery.

Fibroadenoma biopsies are performed under general anaesthetic. During the procedure, the lump is removed along with a section of healthy surrounding tissue. Following this operation, reconstruction surgery is also available.

The below package price is offered to self paying patients specific to procedure CCSD code B2800. There will be no reduction in the package price for a reduced length of stay.

The package price can be paid 48hrs prior to admission and the exclusions (see below) should be paid for on discharge. If pre admission tests are performed and the procedure does not take place you will be liable for the costs of the pre admission tests.
