Bilateral carpel tunnel release is a procedure to relieve the symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrome, carried out on both hands. Your doctor will usually treat your dominant hand first, as this tends to be the one with the more severe pain.
You will lie on your back, with your arm stretched out on an operating board by your side. You will have an inflatable strap placed around the top of your arm to reduce blood flow. The strap is inflated until it fully stops blood from flowing into your hand.
Your doctor will then make a cut near the bottom of your palm and divide your carpal ligament to relieve pressure on your median nerve. Once completed, the doctor will close the cut in your skin with stitches and put on a bandage. You may need to wear a wrist splint.
The procedure usually takes around 45 minutes and you’ll be given a local anaesthetic.
