Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction involves replacing the ACL with part of a tendon (a graft) from another part of the body or from a donor. Grafts are usually taken from the hamstrings or patellar tendon (which secures the kneecap). The procedure is keyhole surgery, performed under general or epidural (spinal) anaesthetic.
The surgeon will use an arthroscope, a thin tube holding a camera and light, to examine the knee. They will drill through the upper shin bone and lower thigh bone to create a tunnel for the graft, which will be screwed or stapled into place.
