A bilateral inguinal hernia is when there are hernias on both sides of the groin at the same time. Its repair is usually performed as keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery.
During the procedure, your child’s doctor will make several small cuts and use various special instruments including a small tube with a light and camera on the end of it (laparoscope) to repair the hernia. They will carefully push the tissue back into place on both sides and then strengthen your child’s abdominal wall muscles to stop the inguinal hernias from coming back. They may insert a mesh covering to protect the weaker areas.
The procedure usually takes less than an hour, and your child will be asleep for the duration.
