An inguinal hernia is when a bulge appears around the groin or scrotum because fatty tissue or part of the bowel has pushed through the inguinal canal. Its repair is either performed as open or keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery.
During the procedure, your child’s doctor will either make one cut (open surgery) or several smaller cuts and use various special instruments to repair the hernia. They will carefully push the tissue back into place and strengthen the abdominal wall muscles to stop the inguinal hernia from returning.
The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes, and your child will either be asleep (keyhole) or awake with the area numbed (open surgery) so they won’t experience any pain.
